Bilbo in young age inherited from his parents the very luxurious hobbit-hole Bag End. In those times he was for a Hobbit unusual eager and impatient, interested in the world outside The Shire. Then he met a travelling wizard called Gandalf who visited The Shire sometimes and who liked Bilbo from the very start. When many years later Gandalf made a plan together with a couple of Dwarves to regain their lost treasure from the dragon Smaug he convinced them to take a Hobbit with them as a burglar. And for this he chose Bilbo.
Bilbo didn't knew what was going on and wasn't even asked. He had changed now quite a lot, was nearly 50 years old, stable, overweight and without any adventuresomeness. Bilbo first amused and then aghasted the Dwarves, who finally only took him with them because of Gandalf. During their journey Bilbo underwent again major changes, brought the Dwarves on his side and got immensely useful.
